Barcoding’s customer, a large U.S. retailer operating more than 200 stores, holds each location accountable for keeping corporate up to date on IT assets in use at the store. The retailer had previously purchased 2,000 mobile devices and Barcoding’s IntelliTrack software and IT Assets bundle. Devices were stored in device lockers at the stores.
Note: This profile and experience are representative of numerous Barcoding customers. The retailer had access to all of IntelliTrack IT Assets bundle’s capabilities but had only implemented the return merchandise authorization (RMA) functionality on its devices — so that’s all corporate could see. Automated reporting for other IT asset data hadn’t been enabled, so stores used manual processes for all other aspects of asset tracking.
As a result, the corporate office didn’t have accurate data about device replenishment needs. Stores’ asset lockers contained broken and damaged devices. Employees sometimes had to swap out nonfunctional devices for working ones.
In addition, employees checked devices out—and back in again—using emails and passwords. The time-consuming process led to workers simply leaving devices checked out at the end of a shift, and sometimes even leaving devices behind in work areas when they left. Employees also experienced device timeouts that kept markdowns and inventory tasks from being completed properly.
Across the board, stores were aware of lost productivity and wasted time as a result, and employee morale suffered. The customer needed greater visibility into asset inventory, location, and status. They also needed consistently reliable device performance and easier processes for employees to use them.
Barcoding’s experts began by asking why the customer was using only IntelliTrack IT Assets bundle’s RMA functionality, since RMAs are just a small part of what IntelliTrack can do. We introduced leaders at the customer’s corporate and store locations to the solution’s full scope of capabilities, and helped them implement the tracking of service contracts, purchase dates, and asset inventory by store location to automate delivery of the data corporate needed, without adding to store locations’ administrative workloads.
We also recommended and helped the customer implement VeriMyTM to automate device check-outs and check-ins. Utilizing the device assignee feature makes check-out even easier—now, when a device is placed on a charger in the device locker, VeriMy automatically resets it to a fresh check-in.
Our team also consulted with corporate IT to address the root cause of device timeouts when all devices were in use at one time and recommended they increase network bandwidth.
Across the enterprise, stores and corporate stakeholders saw similar process improvements. Store-level visibility at the corporate level gives the customer accurate awareness of asset inventory, location, and status—saving time and costs around device replenishment and keeping stores’ devices updated and in optimal working order.
Easy device check-outs and check-ins mean employees no longer leave devices behind in work areas. Improved bandwidth in stores has reduced timeouts so tasks are completed properly, and employees’ attitudes have lifted—alongside equally significant increased productivity.
