Finding Success in Global Supply Chains
How are the top companies in the world finding so much success when it comes to supply chain efficiency? Here is a look at three approaches they all have in common.
Focus on Flexibility
Some firms invest in warehouse management software and use it to find new levels of efficiency and then stop there. However, as trends change, flexibility and agility are needed. The willingness to make changes is also an essential component, and this is something that needs to start at the top. With insight gained from their warehouse management software and analytics, the most successful firms will review their current strategy and make new ones.
Make Efficiency a Priority
This might sound obvious, but it’s a bit more complicated than meets the eye. Every warehouse aims for maximum efficiency, and there’s no secret there. However, what many of them fail to realize – and use to their advantage – is the fact that efficiency and speed are not the same thing. Being quick is always nice, of course, but being accurate, well-organized and clean are every bit as necessary. Pushing workers to do their jobs faster and faster to get every last bit of efficiency out of them isn’t the way to go. Instead, you need to provide them with the environment and tools they need to perform their jobs well. After that, speed will come naturally.
Cooperation Makes it Happen
You might be able to control your own warehouses, but there’s also the global field to consider. It’s essential to communicate clear expectations to vendors and other partners from the beginning when it comes to your long-term goals and strategy because it only takes a failure on the part of one vendor to hold up the entire chain. Let them know the minimum standards they’ll need to meet when it comes to quality, growth, support and consistency, and everyone will benefit.
