Barcoding has Joined the GS1 U.S. Retail Grocery Initiative

We are thrilled to announce that we are now an official member of the GS1 U.S. Retail Grocery Initiative, a group of partners committed to help shape the future of the retail grocery industry and its supply chain.

As a solution provider, we have joined forces with over 70 other academic institutions, associations, distributors/retailers/wholesalers, government agencies, standards organizations, and suppliers/manufacturers. Together, we are working to improve product information, supply chain visibility, data quality and operational efficiencies with GS1 Standards in mind.

GS1 Standards
GS1 aims to establish industry-wide standards that help retail grocery organizations serve their consumers. By adopting these standards, we can help improve inventory visibility and on-shelf availability, manage product tracking and recalls, and keep track of product attributes like nutritional facts and key allergy information. To do this, GS1 works on three platforms: standardizing data exchange, location identification and product identification.

GS1 standards connect the supply chain to leverage common data for accurate and efficient product identification for multiple packaging sizes.

If your system uses the standards, users don’t need to break down cases into unit counts before they can complete a transaction: scan the full cases, scan the full packs, scan the remaining eaches. They have no need to manually calculate the unit quantity if the system can consume the GTIN-based barcodes on the packaging. Further, since lot and expiry information is part of the GS1 data set, one scan could capture everything.

GS1 standards can make your supply chain more accurate, efficient, and connected.

Get started by getting your GS1 Company Prefix to identify your company as the owner of the products and their associated barcodes. Different tiers are available depending on how many products you need to produce barcodes for. If you only need to identify a single product you can license a single GS1 US GTIN for a one-time charge with no recurring/annual fees.
