RFID Tags Bring Benefits of Shopping Online to Clothing Retailers
Consumers enjoy the convenience of shopping online, but there are some cases where shopping in the store is more desirable. For many people, buying clothes online can be very frustrating given the variations in sizes among different brands, driving many die-hard online shoppers to the mall when they need clothes. Many of these consumers are finding themselves pleasantly surprised by the experience these days as shopping in retail stores is now becoming a lot more similar to shopping online thanks to RFID technology.
The share of clothing retailers using RFID has doubled in the last two years, and it is making shopping a lot more convenient for increasingly impatient customers who are used to quick transactions online. Although the technology can be pricey, many stores are finding it to be well worth the outlay.
Facilitating Inventory Tracking
The paper-thin RFID chips are embedded into the tags on garments, making keeping track of them a snap. When a customer needs a certain piece of clothing in a particular size but can’t find it on the shelf, sales associates can immediately tell them if there are more in the store and find out exactly where they are – even if they happen to be tossed in a pile on a dressing room floor!
The benefits don’t end there. RFID tags are also able to help retailers figure out why some items aren’t flying off the shelves. For example, if they see that a dress is brought to the dressing room and tried on multiple times but not purchased very often, it could be that the fit is problematic. Such information can help retailers fine-tune their offerings and ensure they only devote precious shelf space to those items that are most likely to rake in the profits.
While RFID has been around since the early 2000s in retail, it has taken off recently. Macy’s plans to embed the tags into every item in all its stores by the end of the year, and Kohl’s is also hoping it will help them boost sales as well as customer satisfaction.
