NFC Goes Big in Singapore
A large-scale roll-out of NFC technology has made its way to Singapore in the past two days, changing the way residents pay for goods all across the city.
All three of Singapore’s mobile operators, SingTel, Starhub and M1 have joined forces with Gemalto, Citibank, DBS and EZ-Link to bring NFC and mobile payment to Singapore.
The system allows for residents to pay for their purchases at approximately 30,000 retailers throughout the city, simply by using their NFC-enabled smart phone. Currently, NFC handsets from Sony Ericsson and Samsung are NFC enabled, but NFC-enabled SIM cards are also available from the phone companies.
NFC has been in testing in Singapore since 2007, but this is the first NFC-related service to launch.
Will NFC-based mobile payment in Singapore help spread its popularity in Europe and the US?
