New Scanner Could Change the Supermarket Forever

A new barcode scanner from Toshiba Tec could change the way you checkout at the grocery store. The barcode scanner is able to recognize various products placed in front of it, even produce. But how? The barcode scanner is camera based, and thus able to recognize traditional barcodes and objects such as produce.

The scanner is so accurate that it can even tell the difference between, say a Pink Lady Apple and a Honeycrisp… something that not all cashiers are capable of. By blocking out all background information, the scanner is able to detect subtle differences in color, easily distinguishing between produce. This would prevent cashiers from having to memorize or look up produce codes.

Toshiba is currently developing a broad database of products’amd types of produce in order to be able to market their solutions to grocery stores directly.
