Mhada Uses Barcodes to Prevent Forgery

Mhada, the housing and area development authority in Mumbai and surrounding areas, is planning to launch a new barcode-based system for getting documents to tenants. Some tenants have been forging rental or even sale documents for their homes and barcodes would help to prevent this.

“We are serious about this issue and want a permanent solution. Hence, we have decided to issue tenancy-related documents with barcodes. We will proceed with the issue of issuing barcoded documents from mid-November,” said Prasad Lad, chairman of the repair and reconstruction board of Mhada.

There are approximately 19,5000 tenants throughout 20 Mhada transit camps, but about half are staying illegally. Hopefully barcoded rental documents from Mhada will prevent false documents from being created.
