Happy Birthday, Barcode!
Today, June 26, is a very special day in the wonderful world of AIDC—the barcode’s birthday!
Back in 1974, the very first barcode (UPC) was scanned on a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy fruit gum at a supermarket in Troy, Ohio, making today the barcode’s 41st birthday.
Prior to the barcode, there wasn’t a universal system for assigning products—every company had their own method of doing thing. As you can imagine, this caused a lot of error and it was difficult for businesses to, well, do business with each other!
Today, UPC barcodes are scanned billions of times a day across the world. In honor of the barcode on its special day, learn more about the history of barcodes.
Happy 41st, barcode!
