Goodbye POSTNET, Hello IMb!

The USPS recently moved from the POSTNET barcode to the Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb). The switched stemmed from the Postal Service’s desire to encode more information, while minimizing the amount of space taken up by a barcode.

The Intelligent Mail barcode is the result of the Postal Service’s efforts to provide more robust codes capable of encoding more information, while minimizing the space used on the mailpiece. The Intelligent Mail barcode offers:

  • Visibility into mail tracking
  • More effective return mail processing
  • Improved scan rates
  • Less space taken up on mail
  • Delivery confirmation

Full-service IMb users will also be able to receive feedback about the quality of their addresses and get automated correction information.
