Georgia Boll Weevil Implements Track and Trace with CaptureSoft eXpress Solution
Tracking Pest Traps Outdoors Using GPS Technology
The Boll Weevil Eradication program is a cooperative effort in which the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and State officials work with cotton growers to eradicate the boll weevil, in incremental stages, from the United States. Boll weevil eradication began with a successful trial program in North Carolina and southern Virginia in 1978–80. Since then, this program has expanded to include cotton acreage in many states, including Georgia.
Three main techniques are employed over a 4 to 5 year period: pheromone traps for detection, cultural practices to reduce the weevil’s food supply, and chemical treatments for control. In most areas, in addition to the cultural controls, the program begins with a series of treatments in the fall. In subsequent years, traps are placed around all cotton fields in the spring as cotton is planted. Control operations begin about 5 or 6 weeks later and are based on trap captures. Continuous, season-long trapping, pinpoints areas of infestation and triggers necessary treatments until all weevils are gone. This process usually takes about 4 to 5 years in each area.
The Business Issue
The Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation of Georgia Inc. was formed to eradicate the Boll Weevil in Georgia and prevent cotton crop losses. In an attempt to destroy Boll Weevils, the Foundation sets traps in cotton fields spread out over a wide geographic area, which presents a tracking issue. The foundation needed a way to more easily locate each trap to record the accuracy of the monitoring program. If a reinfestation were to occur, the system can map locations showing trends in boll weevil activity. Their existing scanner system did not provide a GPS location element.
The foundation implemented CaptureSoft eXpress running on the CN3 Mobile Computer from Intermec. Inspectors can now plot and monitor the traps providing them with a straightforward graphical map of the current population.
Field operators simply locate the traps, scan them using CaptureSoft eXpress equipped mobile devices, and report the results. This system has created practical and manageable trap monitoring network with a minimum investment.
The software application was designed using CaptureSoft eXpress, once a user has securely logged into their account, plotted GPS records are accessed through their web browser. Custom applications are developed using a step-by-step interface, and the intuitive navigation panel provides uncomplicated data exploration. CaptureSoft eXpress has created a quick and flexible application to fit a host of different circumstances and mobile application needs.
Barcoding Inc. lived up to their promise, helping the Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation achieve its goals. With CaptureSoft eXpress, Barcoding was able to provide a viable solution that was cost-effective, powerful, as well as easy to design & implement.
