eBay Acquires RedLaser To Integrate Barcode Scanning into iPhone Apps
eBay recently announced their acquisition of RedLaser, the mobile barcode scanning application.
Since its deployment, the RedLaser app has had over two million downloads from the Apple App store and is one of the most popular barcode scanning applications on the marketplace. RedLaser’s primary function is to compare prices using its vast product database and was specifically engineered to work with non-autofocus cameras, like those found on mobile phones.
eBay’s plans for RedLaser include full integration of RedLaser’s barcode scanning capabilities into its various apps, such as eBay Marketplace, eBay Selling, StubHub and Shopping.com. In addition, RedLaser will now be a free app, rather than the previous price of $1.99 and will be fully integrated to work with over 200 million listings from eBay, as well as products from over 7,000 merchants on Shopping.com.
eBay is clearly on its way to a big push in the world of mobile e-commerce, with a $1.5 billion worth of goods that have already been sold via mobile devices in 2010 alone! With the acquisition of RedLaser, I can only imagine that their mobile e-commerce will continue to flourish at an unprecedented rate.
If you’re an avid buyer on eBay, mobile e-commerce definitely helps you get that last bid in. Tell us how you feel about the eBay RedLaser acquisition by commenting here, or on our Facebook page.
