Celebrating 40 Years of Standards

Yesterday, April 3, 2013, marked the 40th anniversary of the GS1. Forty years ago, organizations united and agreed upon a universal way to conduct business by using GS1 standards.

It all started with a UPC barcode in a supermarket and now, over five billion GS1 barcodes are scanned each day throughout the world—standards make a global market possible.

From traceability to automatic restocking, GS1 standards have allowed for efficient supply chains across a wide variety of industries. A common language and globally accepted standards are essential for trading partners to be able to understand each other, conduct business one way around the world, and collaborate efficiently, ” said Bob Carpenter, president and chief executive officer of GS1 US.
