BYOD & Security

Yesterday, we discussed the popularity of BYOD. But, as one of our faithful followers posted, BYOD can only be as successful as the security measures in place at the organization.

I recently came across a great example of an organization that had BYOD, but did not take good security precautions.

Earlier this year, the official twitter account for the Dallas Police Department had to tweet, “Our apologies for the fruit Ninja tweet sent earlier. One of our kids played the game on our iPhone and unknowingly tweeted their score.” How embarrassing—don’t let that happen to your company!

In the midst of tweets regarding crime and safety, the Dallas Police Department tweeted, “I just sliced 38 fruit in Classic Mode on Fruit Ninja for iPhone!”

Depending on your type of business, this seemingly innocent tweet could cost you if customers are concerned about your organizations’ security. Aside from the security issues, do you really want your organization to be the internets’ bad example?

While BYOD can be an excellent thing, it can only be successful if the right precautions and policies are put in place.
