Barcodes Could Help Track Criminal Cases
Officials in Lancaster County, PA are looking to efficiently track criminal cases and reduce errors, so they are hoping to implement a barcode system.
The system, the Barcode Evidence Analysis Statistical Tracking (BEAST) would allow departments to assign a barcode to evidence, allowing it to be easily tracked as it moves through the legal system. In addition, since many neighboring departments already use the BEAST system, it would allow for an easy transfer of evidence.
“The ability to better track both property and evidence is paramount to the completion of our mission as far as criminal justice is concerned,” said Steven Echternach, Strasburg’s police chief and the head of the technology committee for the Lancaster County Chiefs of Police Association.
Although the BEAST system is still pending grant approval, it will significantly reduce the amount of paperwork and streamline processes while ensuring evidence is not lost.
